Halifax Common Aquatics Facility

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Halifax Common is Canada’s oldest urban park and a cherished civic space for Haligonians. Located at the centre of a rapidly growing urban core, the Common provides green space and a wide range of recreational and cultural activities that are critical for the wellbeing of the communities that surround it. Replacing an existing, inaccessible facility, the new Pool and Pavilion are an important first step in the implementation of a Master Plan for the Common, one developed to ensure the park is adapted to respond to the changing needs of a diverse population, many of whom live in multi-unit buildings.

The architectural approach elevates simple materials and forms, with easily repeatable and economical galvanized steel elements forming the core of the pavilion’s structure and a sustainable nail-laminated timber roof. The project achieves Net-Zero Energy, with measures including 97 photovoltaic rooftop panels that generate all the power required to operate the pavilion throughout the year. The water from the plaza/splash pad is recaptured and irrigates adjacent sports fields. Designed for maximum accessibility throughout, the project includes a fully accessible kitchen that can support teaching and events indoors and out.
