With over 100,000 sf of diverse and inclusive programming, The Hub provides flexible learning, social, and event spaces. With the project funded primarily by students, substantial input from the McMaster Student Union (MSU) and an engagement process were instrumental in refining the program and design. The Hub’s offerings include a food bank, grocer, and community kitchen run by the MSU Food Collective Centre. A multipurpose room holds up to 500 persons and is equipped to accommodate everything from E-gaming tournaments to prayer sessions.

A ‘re-engineering’ of an existing master plan, an expansion approach was favoured in order to rationalize, reduce cost, and increase density to the north end of campus. Both new and renovated areas were designed to plug into the existing building envelope to preserve the larger precinct’s architectural expression.

Lower atrium level coined the ‘Nest’ and top level, the ‘Loft’, accommodate informal student hang-out, and are convertible to support a range of functions, such as lectures, events, and performances. With capacity for up to 600 persons, the Nest can also extend its activities through retractable doors to an outdoor gathering area.

The inviting arrival level has multi-functional gathering spaces, while level-two provides quieter places to eat, relax, or study. Designed to be more private and discreet, the upper floors offer a broad range of counseling, outreach, and clinical services to address such issues as student mental and physical health.

The Hub is directly linked to the renovated and expanded PULSE Fitness Centre, seamlessly integrating fitness, recreation, and high-performance athletics, to address the whole student experience with a comprehensive range of student services within a compact facility.
