Western North York Community Centre
Toronto, Ontario
For its diverse and growing community that previously lacked public gathering space, the Western North York Community Centre is a vibrant new civic centrepiece. The facility offers social, recreational, and athletic amenities that will serve all residents well into the future, with a design that makes it one of the first Net-Zero emissions buildings in North America and the world’s first Net-Zero Positive Energy aquatic-based community centre. The project’s multifaceted community engagement process also set new standards and has become the precedent for how the City of Toronto will conduct future public consultation work. In the same spirit of place-making, the green spaces that surround the building are inspired by the landscapes of the adjacent Humber River corridor, while they also expand the vibrant life of the community centre to the outdoors and into the surrounding urban fabric.
