Edmonton South Soccer Centre Expansion

Edmonton, Alberta

In Collaboration with MBAC

  • Two Indoor Sports Fields (Soccer Field and Hardscape Field), Spectator Viewing Area, Changerooms, Multipurpose Rooms

A comprehensive graphics and interiors program unifies the indoor and outdoor spaces of our South Edmonton Soccer Centre Expansion, enhancing its clear planning and giving the facility a striking identity. Dominated by a signature yellow, the colour palette is light and bright, complementing the daylit interiors. The materials were chosen for their durability and ease of maintenance. These and the graphics are also used to define and separate areas: for instance, the lobby spaces are distinguished by a translucent metal mesh screen that consolidates the control and concessions while defining a sculptural architectural feature. Above the existing administration bar, soccer netting with custom-printed graphics offers a dynamic view while concealing mechanical ducting and equipment behind.

The project creates exterior social spaces that include seating and public art while they also tie into existing green and urban infrastructure. The vivid yellow that animates these plaza spaces is continued through the interior and, like the expansion’s architecture, references the site’s surrounding industrial context.

The graphics and interior materials reinterpret the familiar language of a typical soccer environment — netting, mesh, colour blocking, and supergraphics.

Large-scale graphics and typography help define spaces and make visitors feel welcomed, uplifted, and energized.
