Malton Community Centre Pool Addition

Mississauga, Ontario

The Malton Community Centre Pool Expansion was conceived within the City of Mississauga’s Strategic Plan for advancing into the 21st century, which prioritizes productivity and health for all its citizens. The project added aquatic programming to an existing community centre that included a public library and other amenities, thus consolidating several recreational services under one roof and increasing the facility’s attractiveness as a destination for all community members.

Our approach also brought a new transparency to the existing building while enhancing its relationship to an adjacent park—qualities especially needed at the project’s urban edge location, which suffered from high rates of vandalism and social frictions. Along with an aquatic hall that is replete with natural light, the design adds a protected porch entry from the park and an extended lobby space aligned with the building’s existing internal public ‘street’, to establish strong senses of place and welcome.
