Ryan Mitchell
Associate | M.ARCH MRAIC
Ryan is valued by colleagues and clients alike for his good-natured ease and expertise in leading across all aspects of the design and construction processes. Highly skilled in building detailing and the technical resolution of design challenges, he also focuses on quality control and has brought his wealth of on-site experience to refining our studio’s drawing standards. At the same time, Ryan’s first priority is to make architecture that responds to the client’s and users’ needs and ambitions, while ultimately surpassing expectations of what community and civic spaces can be.
A lifeguard and competitive swimmer in his youth, Ryan has long been fascinated by the design of athletics facilities and especially their potential to enrich the everyday lives of individuals and communities. He is committed to creating long-lasting architecture that prioritizes natural light and quality of space. He has also especially sought ways to develop programming and cross-programming that will expand the types of experiences multiuse complexes can offer. Ryan is a core team member for MJMA’s portfolio of Greater Toronto YMCAs, including the David Braley Vaughan Metropolitan Centre of Community for which he oversaw drawings and construction. Ryan has lent his expertise in building detailing to the Academic Wood Tower, a campus landmark that displays the University of Toronto’s commitment to sustainable development, with a design highlighting an innovative mass timber structure.
Ryan has a Bachelor of History and Theory of Architecture from Carleton University and a Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture from Dalhousie University. Before joining MJMA in 2015, he worked on a wide range of institutional, campus, community, and housing projects at firms in the Hague, Netherlands, and Toronto.
