Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre
Hamilton, Ontario
The landscape design at the Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre (BMRC) contributes much-needed social greenspace and infrastructure in the heart of the city of Hamilton. MJMA master-planned the precinct that includes a new school and the MJMA-designed BMRC adjoined to the heritage Jimmy Thompson pool. These buildings frame three sides of a park — a generous public space that opens towards the north to form a grand civic ‘courtyard’ with the contiguous space of Tim Horton’s Field and its plaza, a stadium landmark identified with Hamiltonian pride and athletics for almost a century. Pathways around the park provide bicycle and pedestrian routes that link into existing systems and give ready access to transit, including future LRT stops connecting to the city centre.
