Brampton’s Save Max Sports Centre is both a community centre for its surrounding neighbourhoods and a city and province-wide sports facility. The sheer size of the four indoor sports halls called for a cost-effective approach that provided big impact at low cost. Laminated graphics on the glazed exterior create ‘suburban billboards’ that celebrate sport as a community condenser. Linear strips of coloured glass are used dynamically throughout the building to create motion and activity. A full spectrum of saturated colors, reminiscent of the vibrancy of soccer attire, is selected to offset the predominately silver and white palette.
The project applies an urban approach in a prototypical suburban setting. The facility’s siting and transparency engage the street, allowing the interior life of the building to be visible to passing vehicles.
The graphics program of lighting, bold colour, and large scale paint graphics enhance both the facility’s identity and navigability throughout.
