Situated two hours north of Toronto, the town of Wasaga Beach is home to the world’s longest continuous freshwater beach and a storied community that draws locals and tourists alike. While the town has continued to grow and its natural attractions have accommodated increasing demand, MJMA’s state-of-the-art complex added to its civic recreational facilities for the first time in decades — providing not just new amenities but also a place for all residents to come together.

The facility features twin-pad arenas, a new public library (with digital labs, meeting rooms, a children’s zone, and outdoor reading garden), and a spacious, dividable community hall with a full-service kitchen and landscaped terrace that can operate autonomously. Visibility and fluid access between program spaces and from inside-to-out was a guiding design principle. This includes the mezzanine-level walking track circumventing the community arena and offering views to the latter and the lobby as well as access to community offices and a large multipurpose room; these in turn overlook the event arena. The new greenspaces surrounding the facility provide shaded places to rest and gather, including a feature pond that also manages stormwater.

The extent of the town follows its defining attribute, the beach, spread along the southern shore of Georgian Bay. The new facility is located at the town’s northeast end and on the main thoroughfare of River Road.

The building’s simple masses are sculpted with deeply faceted openings that bring light inside while diffusing it for reduced glare and heat-gain. The sloped exterior soffits are visually continuous with the interior’s angled ceilings.

Running between the two primary program volumes formed by the arenas and the library, the ‘social heart’ lobby has entrances off public plazas at either end; these allow events within the lobby to spill to the outside. An open feature stair leads to the upper lobby.

Judiciously placed double-height windows bring exterior views and natural light into the library. Translucent clerestories flood daylighting into other primary spaces: angled ceiling surfaces optimize and gently bounce natural light into the lobby, and the arenas can operate during the day without artificial light, reducing energy consumption.

A comprehensive Experiential Graphics program creates clear navigation throughout the complex and roots the new modern facility within the cultural and natural heritage of Wasaga Beach.
