Chris Burbidge

Partner | OAA MRAIC WELL AP

Chris is a Principal at MJMA and a longstanding core member of our architectural team. With comprehensive expertise and a natural affability, he works closely with colleagues, consultants, and client groups through all stages of project development and completion. He oversees campus and community architecture and is particularly adept at coordinating large and diverse stakeholder groups, along with the services of consultants. He is a client favourite for his ability to listen, and for the creativity, functionality, and overall excellence of his solutions.

Chris is also an accredited WELL professional who has made wellness a particular focus of his design work and research, seeking to develop it in all aspects of a project, from the culture of collegiality and holistic design in our studio, to pushing forward sustainable building practices and creating environments that nurture health in all its forms. A graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, he joined MJMA in 2007 after several years with a Toronto-based firm, where he worked on educational and institutional projects.

He has been a leader on many projects in our studio that integrate high targets for sustainability with spaces that bring comfort and delight to those who experience them, including the Queen's University John Deutsch University Centre Revitalization, Centennial College’s Downsview Park Aerospace Campus, and Centennial College’s Ashtonbee Campus Renewal Student Hub & Library. His large and varied portfolio also includes the multi-award-winning Churchill Meadows Community Centre and Park in Mississauga, a project that exemplifies both our studio’s commitment to affordable yet elegantly designed public buildings and Chris’s belief that connecting people to nature is essential to fostering social bonds and a sense of community. This conviction also informs his work as a volunteer Steward helping maintain the landscape of High Park, a vital natural resource in the city of Toronto.
