Mold-Masters SportsPlex
Halton Hills, Ontario

Client : Town of Halton Hills
Area : 81,000 sf
Program : Twin-Pad Arena (Spectator Seating, Changerooms, Team Rooms), Multi-Purpose Community Rooms, Administrative and Support Spaces
In Halton Hills, Ontario—a town of 61,000 people west of Mississauga—a growing cohort of young residents impelled the expansion of the aging hockey facility, which could no longer meet the community’s needs. MJMA’s 81,000-square-foot expansion adds two NHL-sized ice pads, roughly doubling the facility’s overall size while adding more modern spectator amenities including fixed seats, raked stands for improved views, and in-floor radiant heat.

The arena’s two ice pads are positioned side by side, oriented along a north–south axis such that both rinks feature either eastern or western exposure along one side, opposite the stands. On these exterior-facing elevations, the walls are canted outward, gently reducing solar gain, and broken up by a series of narrow floor-to-ceiling apertures with translucent glazing that admits ample yet diffuse daylight to the arena interiors and makes it possible to skate without the use of artificial light. Additional lighting both here and throughout the Sportsplex is energy-efficient; these and other high-efficiency fixtures helped the project to achieve its LEED Silver sustainability target.

In addition to the two ice pads, the SportsPlex includes spectator seating for 250, 12 team rooms, four referee rooms, and community multipurpose rooms with views of the playing surfaces. Where the expansion meets the existing structure, a redesigned entryway aesthetically knits the new structure to the existing facility, revitalizing the old and signalling the expansion’s modern ice facilities to passersby; inside, a new entry plaza adds internal shared public space: a central corridor that leads from the exterior to both old and new arenas and doubles as a “living room” area for socialization. Here, five warm viewing areas overlook both new and pre-existing ice surfaces.

From both inside and out, the SportsPlex’s canted walls and glazing give it a striking bespoke appearance, establishing its unique identity despite the use of a customized pre-engineered structure for greater cost-effectiveness. In the evenings, the arenas’ vertical windows become glowing stripes that serve as a beacon to vehicles along the main access route.
