Alexandra Sermol

"When I design, I am motivated by the pursuit of creating spaces that allow people to feel comfortable, welcome, and inspired."

Alexandra joined MJMA in 2018 equipped with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies from the University of Waterloo, and a host of international experience. She has contributed to such diverse projects as the curation of State of Fashion, an exhibition designed by Amsterdam’s Space&Matter; the design and tender of DTAH’s Tommy Thompson Park pavilion in Toronto; hospitality design development for Junya Ishigami + Associates in Tokyo; Alison Brooks Architects’ proposal for Kings Cross Tower in London; and the competition entry for Reinventer Paris by Sauerbruch Hutton Architects of Berlin. Alexandra’s extramural experience is equally vast, and includes the design of interactive installations at events for Toronto’s queer and marginalized communities, the study of welding with an eye to its properties in both architecture and furniture design, and the design and fabrication of a wood furniture collection. Her remaining free time is spent illustrating plants—part of a personal interest that led her to collaborate with a Cambridge, Ontario, botanist on a comprehensive houseplant care guide.
