Clarkson Community Centre Expansion
Client : City of Mississauga
Area : 18,300 sf
Program : Aquatic Centre (5-Lane 25m Lap Pool, Changerooms), Multi-Purpose Community Rooms, Administrative and Support Spaces
Completion : August 2011
The new aquatic centre building addition to the existing Clarkson Community Centre presented an exceptional opportunity to create a revitalized focal point of civic life in the City of Mississauga. The new 25metre lap pool and leisure basin provides much-needed pool space for the City’s increased demand in aquatic programs. The project was delivered on a fast-track schedule to meet the Federal Infrastructure Stimulus funding deadline.
The new pool addition extends the existing facility out towards the main street for increased presence and identity on this main artery of the community. All existing pedestrian and cycling routes have been maintained and enhanced. The building pushes forward and is dynamically linked to the existing skate park, making both the park and the building more central to the site plan, rather than a concession at the edge of the site. The front door of the renewed community centre, although not facing the main street, is clearly defined by a large canopy and graphic signage; and becomes the focal point for community interaction.
A large amount of strategically placed glazing communicates the interior activities of the new pool to the exterior, while advantageously opening up the building to receive much more natural light than previously. Approaching the community centre, one can see the warm blue and gold glow of the pool on one side, and the stacks of the existing library on the other. The gymnasium forms the backdrop to the new lobby. This transparency enhances wayfinding with immediate visual orientation. With very little site area, abundant seating and landscaping surrounds the perimeter of the new pool, allowing informal, spontaneous interaction and a casual unfolding of daily life at the community centre.
