Located on Lake Erie, in the southern half of the Niagara Peninsula, the city is situated on Highway #3, an important route between Buffalo, New York and Detroit, Michigan. The city also serves as the terminus of highways which connect to Ontario’s multi-lane, high-speed highway making Port Colborne a short drive from any community in Ontario’s Golden Horseshoe. As such, the Vale Health and Wellness Centre is intended to elevate the profile of Port Colborne as a regional sports tourism destination, attracting tournaments and events, as well as providing for scheduled programming.
The new community recreation centre and spectator venue is located in an existing 35 ha. multi-sports park in the north east quadrant of the City. The complex has two spectator arenas with a second level concourse / running track, a large multi-use field house, and an aquatic centre. The pool is used for training, instructional programs and local recreational use, and has a 6-lane 25metre pool basin paired with a warm water shallow water basin. The facility is nestled within the T.A. Lannan Sports Complex and includes six outdoor bocce courts, six soccer fields, three baseball fields, a playground and recreation trails that connect with the Welland Canal Multi-Use Trails.
The operation of the project is a joint responsibility shared between the municipality and the YMCA of Niagara. The YMCA is responsible for programming of the aquatic centre, a second level fitness and weight training studio overlooking the pool hall, and the large field house.
